Black Box Extension/ Full Architectural Service
Black Box House
This project transforms a home’s rear living areas, creating a light-filled extension that enhances family life and strengthens the connection to the garden.
Previously dark and disconnected, the space now flows effortlessly between indoors and outdoors.
Clad in vertically laid charred larch, the extension embraces the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban technique, ensuring durability while harmonizing with the natural surroundings. The dark timber contrasts beautifully with the greenery, allowing the extension to feel both modern and grounded.
A spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area form the heart of the home. A central island encourages interaction, while full-height glazed doors flood the space with natural light and provide seamless access to the garden. The minimalist design prioritizes function, simplicity, and warmth, transforming daily living.
This thoughtful intervention by RSDS Architects reimagines the home’s layout, replacing small, poorly lit spaces with an expansive, inviting living environment. The result is a sophisticated yet understated addition that has fundamentally improved the way the family interacts with their home and garden.
